8 Traits of a Successful Hair Stylist

Penny Martin Styling Ivana

1.  Prepare Your Tools

A good workmen never blames his tools, however if you haven’t got your tools, it is rather difficult to do your job!  Have all your tools, equipment and products clean and ready to use.  If you are a mobile stylist, prepare a kit the night before, it’s always good to take a spare hair dryer and when you are packing up be sure to only take your own gear.

2.  Personally Customise Your Service

Your number one mission is to make your client happy.  Be sure to find out what your client wants and how they want to look.  If they don’t know, be confident to make great suggestions (fashionable and/ or classic) based on their personal characteristics, their outfit and the event.  Making your client look and feel good is your priority.  Nothing is too much trouble for your client.  Do your best to exceed expectations.

3.  Get Your Skills Up To Date

Make sure you know how to do any styles that you may be asked to do.  Just like a DJ gets asked for requests, we often will be asked to create certain styles too.  Be prepared by keeping up with the trends, get extra training and practice!

4.  Get Permission To Use Your Client Images

Get a media release form before using photos, videos, images on your website or social media.  This covers you legally and shows your clients you are professional.

5.  Be A Great Conversationalist

Ask questions and listen to your clients.  Focus the conversations about your client, make it fun, be appropriate, never gossip.  You may need to learn how to juggle multiple personalities and also counsel people as they open up and share very private information.

6.  Get Connected To Your Client

Connect with your client by building rapport, making them feel comfortable and being kind.  Remember the client is in your care, trusting you with scissors and hot dryers, and how they will look after they are finished with you!  Be a good soul, treat your clients the way you would like to be treated.

7.  Present Yourself Well

You are an image maker so be sure to develop your own image.  Your personal presentation impacts how you are perceived.  Be clean, tidy, and well groomed.  Wear clothes that suit your own style – fashionable, alternative or classic.  Be authentically you so people can trust you.

Also make sure you are well rested, functional and happy so that you have the patience, personality, skills and ability to deliver a great service, even when you have to get up at 3am to do a wedding!

8.  Help Your Client

Find our what your client wants and help them to get it.  Be interested in your client, take time to listen to your client (make sure you dont just talk about yourself!).  You may be able to recommend associates of complimentary services that you trust, for example, make up artists, photographers, celebrants, florists, etc.  This will help your client, your associates and your own business.

Penny Delights Make Up Artists With Hair Styling Training – Blow Dry Case Study

Our first post shared information about new training that Penny Martin is offering to Make Up Artists that want to improve their confidence and hair styling skills.

We thought we would share the great success this has been so far.

Firstly let’s talk about amazing hair and make up artist to the stars ‘Helen Dowsley’
( http://www.helendowsley.com.au )  Helen has been choosing Penny to be her personal Hair Stylist for many years because Pennysimply is the best hairdresser in Sydney‘.  Helen was the one who saw the need in make up artists to improve their hair styling skills and suggested Penny help them.  Helen wrote this testimonial:

Being a Hair and Makeup artist working on a lot of celebrities I am always being asked if I have work available for others.

The problem is they can be a beautiful makeup artist but have very little experience with hair.

Knowing Penny Martin and her extensive work in the industry I asked her if she would be available to do hair courses for makeup artist.

I explained what is necessary for them to learn, how fast and confident they need to be.

The rest I left to Penny to organize.

I am extremely pleased to say there is now a course that not only is designed for each and every student but that a good friend of mine has been through the course and now rocks with her new ability to work with hair.

Penny knows the hairdressing industry incredibly well, but the secret to Penny’s success is she is a true teacher .

Thanks Pen!

Helen shared the first blog with another fabulous Make Up Artist ‘Simone Cozens’
( http://www.simonecozens.com ) who has now done 2 days One on One training with Penny

The training started with Simone showing Penny what she would normally do on a static resource (dolls head).

Penny assessed her skills and then put together an individual education plan so that Simone would be walking away with better techniques, skills, ability and confidence.  For Simone, she wanted to improve her blow drying skills.  Penny showed her some key techniques:

  • the best place to start blow drying
  • the best way to section
  • how to clip up the hair
  • how to smooth the ends
  • the most effective way to blow dry for different textures
  • how to style a fringe
  • the fundamentals of a hair cut and how to enhance it
  • age appropriate styling
  • how to clip in extensions
  • how to increase speed

Simone did some practice on dolls heads and then she progressed onto real people and worked on 3 different live models across the 2 days.  Here is a picture of Simone in action:

Simone said…

  • I have been doing hair and make up for the past 12 years but never felt completely confident in hair. After chatting with Penny she worked out where my gaps were and targeted my training to that. For me I felt weak in blow drying, after 2 days of training I felt very confident and it was just a matter of practicing.
  • Penny is very personable and warm. I felt she was amazing at picking up on the small mistakes, and for me, showing me all the shortcuts that would help the way I do hair.
  • I feel I probably went from a 7 to a 9 in skill. Big boost in my confidence. I then wanted to go away and practice before I came back for a lesson again. It’s great to have that flexibility!
  • I chose Penny because she comes highly recommended by many make up and hair artists that are currently working in the industry
